“The photographer is coming soon, and I have no idea what to do for our photo session.” Does this statement sound familiar? Coming up with ideas for your in-home family photo session can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. The goal of your session is to genuinely connect with your family. Your photographer will worry about turning your moments together into beautiful photos. Below are 13 easy activities for your family to do for your in-home photo shoot.
Play Games
Playing games can be a fun activity for all ages. Whether it is playing a game around the table, playing hide and seek, or having a nerf gun battle, this idea allows everyone to gather together in the same room for pure, interactive fun.
Bake
Baking cookies, or whatever sweet treat you prefer, is a fantastic family photo idea. Everyone in the family will enjoy participating (and eating the treats afterwards), and you will get some wonderful photos out of the fun. You can also include decorating your baked goods–whether it’s cookies, cupcakes, or cake. Another great option is baking a pie.
Have a Pillow Fight
Having a family pillow fight will really get the laughter going! This is a great way to get everyone out of their shells and make it easy for the photographer to capture those bright smiles. A pillow fight will also be a fond memory for the whole family to look back on with a laugh. (Just make sure any breakable items aren’t in the fight area.)
Wear Matching Outfits
Your kids may not be thrilled about this one, but it’s definitely a tried and true family photo idea. Coordinate outfits amongst family members and find your favorite spot in the house for a lovely family photo. Around the holidays, you can wear matching holiday pajamas for a fun family picture.
Decorate the Christmas Tree
Decorating the Christmas tree during your family photo session is a great way to check two items off of your to-do list. Your kids will enjoy putting the Christmas tree together while you are making core memories and getting great pictures to document your tradition at the same time.
Recreate Childhood Photos
If your children are older, find some of your favorite photos of them together when they were little. Find similar outfits to what they were wearing in the younger photos and recreate the poses that they were doing. This idea will make for some silly pictures and great laughs.
Play with Your Kids’ Favorite Toys
If you are doing a photo session with younger children, pick out some of their favorite toys to play with. You can build legos, play make believe with a playset, or have a tea party. This is a great way to keep your younger children entertained during the session and keep smiles on their faces.
Have a Dance Party
Having a dance party is a great way to get everyone loosened up and for your kids true personalities to shine. Turn on some of their favorite songs and have fun with your favorite silly dance moves.
Include Your Furry Family Members
Pets are a part of the family and would love to be included in your photo session. Have your kids play with their pets like they would in their normal routine or find matching outfits for them to wear as well.
Read Together
Reading a book together is a great way to get everyone cuddled up and close on the couch. Pile some of your children’s favorite books together and start reading aloud. This is a great way to remember the books your children loved when they were little and capture a favorite family activity.
Make a Craft
Your kids will be completely absorbed in an activity if they are making a craft together. Kids love being able to create something while also being allowed to make a giant mess. You get two keepsakes at the same time with this activity as well, beautiful family pictures and lovely art projects.
Play Outside
This is technically not an in-home/indoor idea, but definitely something to keep in your back pocket in case your kids need a change of scenery. Work in the garden, jump on the trampoline, play on the swingset; there are endless possibilities of photo session ideas for the backyard.
Do Your Normal Routine
This idea may seem boring, but it is definitely where some of the sweetest memories and pictures are made. Is there something in your daily or weekly routine that brings your family a lot of happiness? Incorporate this into your family photo session for you to remember for a lifetime and potentially recreate as your children get older.
The family that plays together, stays together! Have fun with your in-home family photo session and enjoy the wonderful results that follow. You can even combine a few activities if you need a longer session or if your children have short attention spans.
