When it comes to finding the perfect family photographer, there are so many things to consider. From the photographer’s experience and style to the products and services they provide, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure you’re getting the best photographer for your family.
Choosing the right photographer for your family session is important because you want to make sure that the photographer understands your vision and is able to capture it. A good photographer will be able to work with you to create beautiful images that you will cherish for years to come. They should be experienced in working with families and have the technical knowledge to produce the best results. They should also be able to provide a comfortable and enjoyable environment for you and your family to enjoy the experience.
Some photographers offer complimentary consultations, where they will often answer all of your questions before you even have to ask. But if they don't, be sure to at least have a phone conversation and ask questions until you're comfortable with your decision.
To help you in your search, here are 12 questions to ask before you book a family photographer:
1. How long have you been a family photographer?
This question is important to ask to get a better understanding of the photographer’s experience level. It’s always beneficial to hire someone with years of experience in their craft, as they’ll have a better understanding of how to capture family portraits that are technically correct, beautifully composed, and that show the connection between the members of your family.
2. Why did you become a family photographer?
What is it about this genre that made them want to focus on it? Some photographers don't have a niche, and you may want to consider if it's important to you if their main focus is family photography or if it's one of many genres that they offer. There can be pros and cons to a photographer who offers many genres (weddings, family, newborn, etc.).
3. What is your photography style?
Every photographer has a unique style and it’s important to understand what style they specialize in to ensure it’s the right fit for your family. The best way to learn about a photographer's style is to look at their portfolio of work. This will give you an idea of what types of images they take, their composition style, and the overall aesthetic of their photography.
4. Are you available for the date we hope to have our session?
If you have a specific date in mind, make sure they’re available for the date you hope to schedule your session before you commit to a photographer. This is especially important if you’re working to plan a session for your extended family, where multiple people have to coordinate their schedules and work together.
5. Do you offer any additional services?
Some photographers offer additional services, such as hair and makeup, wardrobe consultations, or wall art installation, which can make your family portrait experience more comfortable and convenient. Ask the photographer if they offer any additional services and if there’s an additional cost associated with them.
6. How do you run your sessions?
Is there an average length of time that sessions run? Is that flexible? Besides the time commitment, find out what you and your family can expect during your session. Every photographer runs their sessions a little bit differently. Make sure their process fits with what your family is looking for.
7. Do you provide the digital images?
It’s important to know what the photographer’s policy is when it comes to providing digital images. If you are interested in purchasing these files, you usually can do so, but you’ll want to know if these are full-resolution images or smaller, web-sized images. In addition, some photographers have a policy that you must purchase a collection or a certain number of printed products before digitals may be purchased. Every photographer is different, so don’t be afraid to ask if this is something you’re wondering about.
8. What is your turnaround time?
Typically, photographers will provide their turnaround time in their pre-session communication. This will give you an idea of how long you can expect to wait for the final images. It’s important to be aware of the turnaround time so that you can plan accordingly. If you need the images by a certain date, make sure to let the photographer know and they can work with you to ensure that the images are delivered on time.
9. What is your cancellation policy?
Sometimes things come up that are beyond our control, so it’s important to know the photographer’s cancellation policy. This will help you to know what to expect in the event that you need to cancel the photography session. Some photographers will have a clause in their contract that outlines their cancellation policy, so it is important to read it thoroughly before signing on the dotted line. This policy should include the photographer's terms and conditions, including any cancellation fees and deadlines.
10. How many proofs will we get to view after the session?
The answer to this question will vary from photographer to photographer. Generally, the number of proofs will depend on the type of session, the length of the session, and the photographer's own editing style. It's important to discuss this with your photographer before the session so you know what to expect.
11. What kinds of prints and products do you offer, and what’s your general pricing range?
These questions will help you determine what type of prints and products you may be interested in for your home, and help you plan for how much they will cost. Additionally, you can ask about any additional services they offer such as mounting, framing, and digital retouching.
12. Do you have any testimonials from previous clients?
These can be found on their website or in online reviews. Additionally, if possible, it is recommended to meet with the photographer in person to discuss your vision and expectations. This will help ensure that the photographer understands your needs and can provide the best results.
By asking the right questions, you can ensure you find the perfect family photographer for your needs. And of course, I hope that perfect photographer is me!
